plasmasphere

A region of high-density cold plasma surrounding the Earth above the ionosphere, i.e. at altitudes greater than about 1,000 kilometres (600 miles). It extends out to between three and seven Earth radii. The upper boundary is marked by a sudden drop in plasma density, known as the plasmapause. The particles in the plasmasphere are almost all protons and electrons.
